I went to a computer today that I haven't used for 3 days to put in some new memory. It had 512 MB, and I was taking it to 2 GB. Anyway, as soon as I booted it up, it didn't do anything but just beep. It beeps six times, in this order
Long
Long
Short
Short
Pause
Long
Long
Thank you all in advance for any suggestions. I unplugged the memory and put the old back in, same thing. I disconnected the hard drive, all the cables for it, and reconnected it, same thing.
Thanks for any help.

Did you check motherboard's manual how much RAM you can add?
Are you sure, you bought correct type of RAM?

I did. It takes PC3200 RAM, and that's what I got. It can hold to a max of 2 GB, and I got 2 GB. I even put the old RAM back in there, but, it didn't make a difference.

Im not finding that specific error code on dells website, closest thing I can find indicates some sort of memory error, which leaves us at square one. Did you try the single stick in all the slots, and did you properly ground yourself out before working on the computer? Also, Dell indicates there should be diagnostic lights on your motherboard, perhaps if you would try to find them on your board and see what they are telling you by using this guide, it may help us narrow it down further.

Well, according to the code, (2 yellow, 2 green) it's a defective memory module. That's strange - I put the old ones back in and it did the same. Oh well - will do it again tomorrow night.

did you try just putting one in, and trying it in each of the seperate slots? and trying the same thing with each?
