Strange Line In Close Program Window Smc not responding

After scanning the system with Avast, I found a lot of the desktop icons were no longer visible - just the text. On pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del the line:
Smc not responding came up.

A search of the Microsoft KB yielded no answer, so I'm hoping someone can tell me what this refers to. Also has it anything to do with the desktop icons (some of them have reappeared, though not all.

Do you run Sygate Personal Firewall. They had some issues with users running version 5.6. Try rolling back to 5.5, or take a look at the new beta they have.

I do have a recently installed version of Sygate which I have un-installed and am downloading the 5.5 version. I think this will solve the problem.
