When I start up the computer the screen goes black at windows(vista home premium) startup and states "no signal". If I put the computer into sleep mode, then wake it up, the screen works. This also tends to happen when I playing certain video games, such as Free Realms, but not other games such as Oblivion and Civ 4. I had it diagnosed at a computer store and they said that no problem was found in my hardware and that "there were signs of Windows O.S. corruption" and recommended a system restore.

I restored my computer to factory settings yet that hasn't helped. I also cleaned the inside of dust and put new thermal paste on the heatsink.

My computer is a gateway with an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core processor, 4 GB DDR2 memory, and an ATI Radeon 3650 HD graphics card. The monitor is only a few weeks old and works perfectly on other computers.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried reseating the graphics card, if using something other than onboard graphics?

No signal indicates a problem with the video transmission from system to monitor...the trick is to see which is at fault.

Can you try a different monitor with your system temporarily...to see if the situation replicates?

I'd say that the fact that it also occurs during game-playing...points at the graphics.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried a different monitor and I have the same problems. I also removed the graphics card and put it back in, didn't help.

Gateway suggested that the partition used in the system recovery might have been corrupted and to try a recovery cd. So I'm hoping that will help.

I would try replacing the vide card all together. Seems like it is possibly dying.

Do you get any pixelation while gaming? How hot does it get?

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.
