It's not always about money. I don't care about THAT money, because they don't give me anything
We're talking about popularity here.
World Cup is watched by a few billion people.

Regarding ice hockey, during regular season, if the game is tied after 3 periods, each team is rewarded 1 pointthey play 5 minutes of sudden death OT. If nothing happens, the tie stays. If someone wins in OT, that team receives a second point.
There is no tie in playoffs.

Come on now, it's ALWAYS about the money lol. Ok, so it's not.

Thanks for that hockey (american) explanation. i have always wondered how that worked. While you are on a roll here explain a couple of soccer things to me please.

Offsides: I don't get it. A guy can't run to a place where someone is going to kick the ball to/

Yellow Cards: If you get two yellow cards you get a red card? Doesn't that mean if you get a yellow card then the next card you get is red?

I don't know how to phrase the next question so I'll just up and say it: When the ball is in play, IE it's not out of bounds, there's not a penalty or anything, and a guy kicks it back to his goalie, is it illegal for the other team to bum rush the goalie, get the ball and kick it in the goal? I don't get that part. I see it happen all the time. A guy kicks the ball to the goalie and the other team runs away.......... does my question make any sense?

Oh, and BTW did I hurt your feelings on this thread Broni?

At the very moment, someone passes a ball to you, you have to have at least 2 opposite team players even, or in front of you. Every part of your body counts.
It doesn't matter, if this is a goalie and 1 defender, or just 2 defenders (in case, goalie traveled somewhere). 2 players.

The blue forward on the left of the diagram is in an offside position as he is in front of both the second-to-last defender (marked by the dotted line) and the ball. Note that this does not necessarily mean he is committing an offside offence.

Posted Image
The blue forward in the penalty box of the diagram is not in an offside position, as he is behind the ball, despite the fact that he is in front of all but one of his opponents.

Yellow Cards: If you get two yellow cards you get a red card? Doesn't that mean if you get a yellow card then the next card you get is red?

Yes, but usually, the referee will pull yellow card out first and then he'll show you the red one.

is it illegal for the other team to bum rush the goalie, get the ball and kick it in the goal?

The answer is two-part.
It is legal to try to take away a ball from a goalie, as long, as it touches the ground (say, the goalie just put his hand on the ball, but the ball is still on the ground). If the ball is is off the ground in goalie's possesion, you can't do anything.
Now, some years ago, the rules has changed regarding passing the ball to your goalie.
Because, in some situations (at the end of the game), teams would be milking the time by constantly passing the ball to a goalie, there was a change.
Now, you can kick the ball to your goalie, but he can't pick it up with his hands to hold it. He's treated as any other player and he can use his feet only.
The only exception is, if you pass the ball to your goalie using your head. Then, he can catch it with his hands.

Thanks for the rest but I want to focus on the goalie thing. You nailed it perfectly and actually answered a question I didn't ask, which was why didn't the goalie pick up the ball. But onwards........

So if a player kicks the ball to the goalie then it is still in play as it were. Why doesn't someone on the other team EVER run to the goalie to either rush his kick downfield or steal the ball? It seems like a good tactic to me, but then i don't know squat about football.

Also, was I right in my assessment that the British team was better than us? We had the ball more, but it looked to me that they did MORE with the ball when they had it. They scared the hell out of me at least four or five times with their shots on goal. I felt like we only had about 2 serious chances of a ball going in (not counting that little league ball that actually DID score).

Also: now that we have a tie, supposing everything goes like the analysts say and both the US and UK win their next two games, does that affect anything in further rounds? Who is first in our bracket? Or does it even matter? IE If they both win out the rest of the way they just move to the next round like they would have had one or the other won?

EDIT: Wicked cool diagrams and explanation on offsides. Thanks.

Edit II: Offsides sucks. All an defending player has to do is stay behind the offensive guy on a break away. The faster, better athlete gets penalized for being faster and better. In American football, if a receiver beats a defensive guy he gets a touchdown. In soccer, if a guy beats his opponent he gets a penalty for being better.

They often do. Normally the opposite team forwards are too far to steal the ball (a ball is always faster, than the fastest player), but sometimes, under the pressure, the goalie is forced to kick the ball out of play, instead of passing it forward.

was I right in my assessment that the British team was better than us?

Well, the "better" doesn't bring any points. Goals do. Actually the ball possession was, last time, they showed the numbers, 52% to 48% in favor of England.
It's like every sport, you have more possession, you can have more chances, but what counts is the score.
I'd say, England had more chances, but some of them were wasted in really poor way. If England plays the same way in next games, I don't think, they'll go far.
However, it was only 1st game.

Like in many other sports, there are tiers. Someone has to be 1st, someone 2nd.
Tiers:
1. points
2. goal difference
3. goals for
I believe (I'd have to check), that actual tier #2 is the match result between two teams (If England and US will be # 1 and 2, it doesn't matter, since the score was 1:1)

Thanks Broni, I appreciate the lessons.

I guess it just seemed to me like we had the ball more and did less with it IE the ball was on the other side of the line more. But then I'm a novice and the whole thing was new. Other than watching a few games of the Altanta Beat, the defunct Atlanta WUSA soccer team with Briana Scurry and Cidy Parlow, I have never seen a live soccer match. I had never watch a whole match on TV until now. I must say, it is much better live than on TV.......... but then most things are. In used to be an avid golfer but I HATE to watch golf on TV. I think I'd rather watch grass grow. However I did get tickets to see the Tour Championship at East Lake a few years ago. It was awesome watching it live.

Oh well, I'll keep up with our team as best I can and when/if they get eliminated that will probably be it for me. I'm the same in every sport. If the Braves aren't in the World Series, I don't watch. Same with B-Ball or American football. I've watched probably 3 Superbowls in the last 20 years lol. It's just not the same if you don't have a dog in the fight.

Thanks for the input, I'll more than likely have more questions as I watch more.

Edit: we need to have a thread for the FIFA in general, not just this one match up. I also wonder about Trollock. He was gonna get drunk if England lost and massively drunk if they won. WHat did he do with a tie? Sober up?

Hello again DeathStalker and Broni.

I agree about starting a new thread about the whole FIFA World Cup Program.......Feel free to repost my links in it and if you found some more new links to it will be better........ Myself even if my teams get eliminated I always watch the whole thing until the last two face each other....it gets better by the day if you keep in track what the other teams are doing....specially if an important player starts collecting yellow cards....then it is when you are into because that player may not be able to compete in the following game.....and things can get ugly...

Enjoy the games.............I do.

Why all the criticism of the England Goalie, in the media.

It's a team game (of football, not soccer, Deathstalker, LOL); why didn't England put another one in the net.

Sssshhhhhhh, can you post a little quieter please,my head hurts.A brilliant night spoilt a little by one of the worst goalkeeping mistakes in history.

There has been some great posts on here since last night especially from deathstalker who i believe understands football a bit better than he thinks. His point about USA having most of the possesion but not doing anything with it is spot on.Pretty much any team who plays England does this but scoring the goals is what the game is all about.
He doesn't really like our football but thats fair enough,if you ask most people about NFL over here they will say they hate it.Me personally i love it and have watched it since it came on tv here in 1984,Colts are my team and yes, they were even before Peyton Manning arrived.I don't like baseball though or any of the other main US sports.

Looking forward to Friday night now when the next England game is on,after last nights result a win is a must so we have to take our opportunities in front of goal and not make any more stupid mistakes,The US should also be good enough to win their other games in this group and qualify for the next round.

Right i have just noticed that the pubs are open again so i am off for "hair of the dog"

Good on you, Mate, we face off at Germany, We would love a Draw. BTW, The Yanks beat us in a Friendly.

That is a Team to Respect. They could just upset, just as the Aussies did last one. Aussies were eliminated by the eventual Winners, under funny conditions?

Net Surfer gave me another question: Yellow cards pass from game to game? So what happens if a guy gets a red card then? Is he out the rest of the tourny and his team has to play one man short?

Yes. Two yellow cards in any two games will earn a player a one-game suspension.
Same goes for a red card.
