BleepingComputer.com: DVD burning fails with LG GH22NS50

Hello, I am using a new LG GS22NS50 DVD writer (2 weeks old) & Nero 9 Lite. I am running Windows XP SP3. A few weeks ago I had this DVD Writer installed on my computer & it uses SATA. Back then I used Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 free. However when I tried my 2nd DVD with this writer (the 1st one wrote ok), after burning for some time, my computer froze (i could click around, but my downloads & uploads had completely stopped & any application after focusing on it would be unresponsive). the LED kept on blinking and HDD usage light was on constantly. After about 10 minutes, it ejected the DVD & said "Burn failed". Also the DVD could not be accessed.

Thinking it was a faulty DVD Writer, I replaced it with another one of the same model. But that too, caused the same problem. However, when I installed Nero 9 lite & tried to burn DVDs it worked. But after writing a few more discs (I dod not write 6 or 7 one after another, only 1 or 2 at a time), the same problem started occuring.

On the recommendation of a friend, I changed the CONFIG.NT in \Windows\system32 to:
"files=100
buffer=20"
whereas previously the setting was:
"files=20"(I think).
Rest of the file is unchanged.

After this I was able to write a few DVDs again. However, once ir twice, the machine would freeze for a few minutes & then would resume writing & burn was successful.

But from yesterday when I try to write a DVD, it fails again. This time however I am able to access the DVD and apparently all the files have been written successfully. But when I compare the written files with the original, only the files written before the freezing were successful. Other files got only 1& match (I used the software CDCheck).

Hello and welcome to bleepingcomputer!

I have read your description and logs you posted above.

One of the key items I noticed in your log is this line I have in bold below.

Burn process failed at 16x

Although this is a new drive, the question that has to be raised is whether your system bus speed can handle the 16X write speed?

There are settings you can adjust in most burn software programs that you can drop the write speed down to a more stable burn speed of 2x or 8x.

The slower speeds allow for less chances you will get buffer over-run errors as well.

You could also check to make sure your motherboards chip-set drivers are updated to the latest available from your chip-set vendor as these drivers help control the system bus speed without errors occurring.

Also last but not least, make sure any cables or wires are in top condition and the highest quality, as these can cause bottle-necks to occur. (The data can not flow as fast as it needs to through the wire, or causes intermittent connection problems.

Try what I suggested above and please keep us posted with your results.

Sorry for being so late in replying.

First I tried with slower speeds, but again the burn failed.

After that I installed the latest drivers for my ULi m1573 Southbridge (which also includes SATA, I think.) from here:

And after installing the drivers, the DVD burning works like a charm. Now I can burn DVDs at 16x and browse the internet at the same time. I think the problem was missing or old Southbridge drivers (I have to install SATA drivers using a floppy while formatting Windows XP, otherwise the Setup cannot detect my SATA Hard Disk).

Anyways, thank you very much for helping me out. I am really grateful.

EDIT: Just after posting this, I tried to burn another DVD. I have started using CDBurnerXP for writing DVDs after installing the drivers mentioned above. The burning failed again. The log says:

Is it because of the 16x writing speed? But it did write a few DVDs at 16x without any problem. Anyways, can anyone please explain what this error means? Also is it identical to the "Reset occured" as mentioned in the 1st post? And also I would like to know more about these two errors. Thanks in advance.

After my last post here, I formatted my Windows system partition, installed Windows XP SP3, got the latest updates & tried burning again using Imgburn. This time the burning effectively stopped around 50%, and the write speed said 0x. But the LED was blinking and the hard disk usage was full (the HDD Usage light was constantly on). It stayed like this for over half an hour & I could not terminate the process with Task Manager. Also manually aborting the process did not do anything, it was simply stuck on "Abort Request Acknowledged".

After that I bought a CD-DVD Lens Cleaner, used it, installed SPTD 1.69 & then tried burning again. It burned fine without a hitch. I burned 7 DVDs without any problem one after another.

2 days later (Today) I tried burning again, and this time again had the same old error mentioned in the 1st paragraph of this post. When I restarted and tried to verify the compilation using Imgburn, it gave the error:
"W 20:11:17 Failed to Read Sector 1615504 - Reason: Unknown (CRC or ECC Error) (ASC: 0x10, ASCQ: 0x90)"

Up to this point, I had been using TDK DVD-Rs. After the error, I again cleaned the lens and then tried burning using a SONY DVD+RW at 4X. This time the machine completely froze at around 60% and would not respond at all. Just like before, the LED was blinking and the hard disk usage was full (the HDD Usage light was constantly on). I had to use the reset button again to get control on my system back.

My computer specs are as follows:

Processor: P4 2.8GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5RD1-VM
Memory: 1.18 GB (+64 MB Shared) --> 1GB (400 Hz) & 256 MB (333 Hz)

I am getting fed up of this problem. Sometimes it writes DVDs, sometimes it simply crashes like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

You can't do any reliable testing with RW's or lower grade DVD +/- R's. Stick with Imgburn and try some verbatim disks.

I have been inactive this last year but there were a lot of problems with sata dvd burners and older non intel southbridge chipsets.

The Imgburn forum would probably be your best bet for some expert help, this is brain surgery and rocket science.
