BleepingComputer.com: help and support not opening

WinXP Home SP3

when i click on Help and Support i just get a flicker of the hourglass then nothing
the helpctr.exe file is in the pchealth/system/binaries folder as i believe it should be.
i ran FixWinXPHelp.exe from http://www.dougknox.com/index.html
and it says the registry entries are correct. i did see the helpctr.exe entry in the registry.
i ran HouseCall and no problems
ran MalwareByte's and no problems
i even rebooted
this is a newdrive put in abut two weeks ago and this is the first time i opened Help and Support

from what i've read some cleanup programs remove items they shouldn't.
i use CCleaner and recently CleanUp.
i have never had any problem with CCleaner and maybe CleanUP removed something.
when i go into the binaries and try to open the helpctr.exe file it does not open.
just a flicker of the hourglass and that is it.

the individual .chm help files in the Windows\Help directory open up
whatever it is that pulls them all together is messed up.

I looked at Kellys Korner and found a few entrys listed alphabetically under "H" for Help Site on their general site but they were a bit vague -

that is a great site.
i tried the simple fixes like fixing the registry entries - mine did not have the '1' and '2'
plus some of the other simpler attempts.

so the next thing is to try and rebuild it per their instructions.

Just a question. Did you use the registry cleaner in Ccleaner

as i recall yes.
do you know a fix?

A repair install of XP or running the sfc /scannow command...would be the best way to attempt to replace any damaged or missing system files.

well, that is intense and may be a bit above my capabilities.
plus i have no cds.

i guess i will just let it go for now till i can have a qualified tech take care of it.

The reason I asked the question is I have been there and done that. I was running XP PRO-SP3. It took Mr. Wu form M/S and a lot of emails for over a month to repair the problem. If you can start with what hamluis has posted you just might solve your problem. IMHO that is why B/C doesn't recommend any type of registry cleaner/scanner or speed up for registries.

Give this a whirl - no XP media required.

Locate c:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf, right click and choose to Install.

You may be prompted to enter your XP installation CD as it looks for the
installation files. The files are on your XP installation CD or already
on your system from the original installation, you just need to tell the
installation where to look.

If you don't have an XP installation CD, change the Copy file from dialogue
(by clicking the Browse and Retry buttons) to point to the appropriate folder
for each requested file:

dataspec.xml (c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386)
pchdt_w3.cab (c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries)
HCAppRes.dll (c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries)
atrace.dll (c:\windows\system32)

Reboot your system to be sure the installation is complete.

Test.
