Networking an XP and Windows 7 PC together?

Is it actually possible to successfully network a PC running windows XP with a Windows 7 installed PC. I have tried everything that I know to do, but had no luck. Put them on the same Workgroup name. Made them both have the same user name and password. I don't like doing this option as I hate having to type the password in and not having a different user name for each computer. I can't see any network path for the XP computer on the windows 7 PC. On the XP PC it says that the workgroup is not accessible. Can someone help me or direct me to a good link or article on this topic. Thanks.

it should work.
this article explains how to enable file and printer sharing on both.
check for additional 3rd party firewalls that would be blocking access

I have followed the tutorial and still seems like it isn't working. Neither PC see's each other. Windows XP says I can't access the workgroup. Is there other things I should check. I disabled the firewall on both systems. Thanks

double checking the following
both computers on the same workgroup
both computers plugged into the same switch/router
check the ip address of both computers the both should be a.b.c.X and a.b.c.Y
can you ping computer a from b and vise versa?
does your switch/router prevent local sharing?
