Hi all, I hope you can help.

I have a windows XP machine with a few shared folders on it. Within the past week, I am no longer able to access the shared folders. When I try to connect directly to them I get the following error message:
-------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------
xxxxx
---------------------------
\\xxxxx\test is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help.

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

So far, I tried this and or found this out:
I can ping the computer from itself as well as other computers by name or IP address
From other computers, if I put in the computer name I do not see the shares.
From the same computer, it shows the shares, but I can't get to them.
The folders do exist. I can get to them through explorer on the machine
I have Unshared and reshared folders.
I have turned off file sharing and turned it back on.
Uninstalled and reinstalled file and printer sharing
The computer has Microsoft Security essentials

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Harv

Editing the name of the computer could possibly lead to further delays in assisting you. So please provide the full name of the machine as well as the internal IP address, so we can better assist you. With out that its like going to a doctor saying you are sick, but covering the symptoms.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Can you bring up a command prompt window via Start > Run > cmd hit enter

Type in net session then paste the contents here.

After you do that type in the following:

net use * \\192.168.7.11\test

Paste the results here.

C:\Users\cryptodan>net use /?
The syntax of this command is:

NET USE
[devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
[/USER:[domainname\]username]
[/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
[/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
[/SMARTCARD]
[/SAVECRED]
[[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]

NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME

NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]

I am assuming that this should be done from the computer with the shares on it. This is the results from there:
C:\>net session
There are no entries in the list.

C:\>net use * \\192.168.7.11\test
System error 1231 has occurred.

The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troublesho
oting, see Windows Help.

C:\>

But, since I wasn't sure, I ran it from the computer that is trying to get into the shares on that computer, too.
C:\Documents and Settings\Harv>cd\

C:\>net session
There are no entries in the list.

C:\>net use * \\192.168.7.11\test
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

Try this:

System error 1231 has occurred. The network location cannot be reached.

Symptom: When using net view \\computername, you may receive System error 1231.

Resolutions: 1) make sure Client for MS Networks is enabled, 2) make sure you have permission to access it.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

I used net view, below are the results. I also checked the Clients for MS Networks and it is enabled.

C:\>net view \\baxter
Shared resources at \\baxter

Share name Type Used as Comment

--------------------------------------------------------------
Printer Print Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Radio Disk
test Disk
The command completed successfully.

Is the test disk the one with the shares on it?

If that is the case then its

net use * "\\baxter\test disk"

I'm not really sure what happened, but it appears to be working, now. I entered
C:\>net use * \\192.168.7.11\radio
Drive Z: is now connected to \\192.168.7.11\radio.

The command completed successfully.

since then, everything appears to be back to normal.
