I have a Dell Dimension 4600 that came with a standard optical drive(D:) and a DVD drive (E:) and is operating on Windows XP. I bought an HP DVD burner 1270i to replace the standard optical so I could burn DVD's. The way in which the two drives from Dell were connected was with a single data cable that had two plugs. I unplugged the top drive(standard optical) and left the bottom drive plugged in. I removed the standard optical drive and replace with it the HP drive and connected the SATA data cable to the motherboard and used a SATA power cable adapter.
Turned the computer on and the HP drive was recognized as drive D:, the position the drive I removed was in, however, there is no longer a drive E:. I placed a disc in drive E: but nothing. I went into my computer and the only optical drive showing is drive D:. I reseated the drive E: connection with no result.
What am I doing wrong?

Ok i have a couple of questions,
1. so you have 2 optical drives right?
2. are both on sata or is the 2nd one on IDE?
3. is your hard drive on ide or sata?
