pc running slow

hi.
can someone help me please. my pc is slow to start up and continues to be slow when it is running.also after about a hour of being on a message comes up that i am low on virtual memory and windows needs to increase it.i am sure this is not normal?????????

What are your computer specs? How much ram do you have?

windows xp home edition, 2.8ghz,intel pentium 4, 1gb of ram,160gb hard drive

ok So there are a multitude of causes of a slow computer, one thing i want to know is:

1. what anti virus software (if any) do you use?
2. what programs do you have set to start on boot up?

i have avg 9.0 free.how do i know whats in startup?

to see whats running at startup go to start, run, msconfig and click the startup tab

Click: Start>Run, then type in

msconfig

Go to the Startup tab.

I strongly suspect, your computer may be infected.
