No, that is not an installation disc...only a repair disc. You will need a real installation disc to reinstall Vista...it's not something you can download. How to replace Microsoft software

Yeah, slaving it to a different computer would be the easiest thing to do. I gave the option of copying via command prompt not knowing all your options. All you need off it is your data (documents, music, photos, etc..). You don't need system files of any sort. They won't do you any good. You have to do a clean install since your current installation is borked (by the cloning process, no doubt)...a clean install puts all new system files and such.

i'm a little confused on what exactly i should be looking for on that link. i have an hp pavilion, so should i be trying to contact hp and get what i need? does it cost money to request a disc from them?

i edited my post before i'm not sure if you saw it or not since i didn't know you posted again before i edited.
this is what i wrote

the computer i'm using right now is basically the same as mine, it has some different hardware but it's almost the same. it has a recovery drive on it, would i be able to make a disc on this computer and use it for mine? but if i did that would i have to download a whole bunch of drivers?

A recovery partition on a separate computer will do you no good for the PC in question. If you had a recovery DVD, maybe you could make it work. But a recovery partition...no way.

As for getting a disc from HP, you'll just have to call them and plead your case.

Here is the number according to the information at that link I gave you:

(800) 474-6836

They may charge you a small fee for the cost of the physical media (disc). I don't really know. You'll just have to work it out with HP.

what i meant was, what if i created a recovery dvd on this computer im using now, and then use the dvd on mine? there almost the same computer, except the processors are different brands.

i just got a reply from the guy that did my hard drive. he said he tried to fix the boot sequence on the clone drive but there were so many bad sectors and serious corruption it was impossible.

i'll give that number a call, but if you think that recovery dvd idea might work hopefully i can give that a try first.

well i just called them, i guess it'll cost around $30

i asked him about the recovery thing with the other computer, the guy said it wouldn't work since all models are specific.

so i guess i really have no choice but to order it.

the thing is the guy never called them installation discs he said they were recovery discs. this should be the right thing right? i just don't to buy something that won't fix my computer.

You cannot create a recovery DVD using a recovery partition. Even if you could, like the guy said, it's for a different computer anyway.

If you get a disc from HP, it will be a recovery disc made specifically for your computer, including all the crapware that comes on a new computer from the respective manufacturer (HP in your case).

If you got a disc from Microsoft, THAT is a bonafide installation disc (aka retail copy of Windows). So yes, as far as that guy is concerned, it's a recovery disc (it "recovers" your system back to factory conditions). If you just want a clean install disc (not recovery), you would have to buy a disc from Micro$oft for X amount of dollars (in the hundreds, as you would be getting a new product key, as well).

But yeah, a recovery disc is what you need.

alright, i just got my system back up an running again. everything seems fine so far

only thing is that i'm trying to get my firefox bookmarks transferred but i can't find the profile for the life of me.
i've been searching and looking stuff up for hours and still can't find anything.

it's supposed to be in c:/users/username/appdata/roaming/ blah blah

the thing is there is no appdata folder on my old hard drive.
it's there on my new hard drive, but i can't find out where it is on my old hard drive, and i have show hidden folders on.

it shows it under public and default but for my username it's not there

this is literally driving me crazy.

EDIT: i've created a new topic on this
