That happens...when the CMOS battery needs to be replaced.

The system defaults to the messages displayed in first post. The PXE, etc. is for a network boot.

I would buy a CMOS battery and replace it.

Ok I've replaced the CMOS battery = No Change

I've acquired a Windows Vista Home Premium OEM, which is the same as the previously installed version = No Change

I have tired tapping and holding f5, f8, f10 during start up = No Change

It continues to display:

Boot from AHCI CD-ROM :

PXE-E53: No boot filename received

PXE-M0F: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent.

Is there a forum where I can get help to get this computer to work better suited than this one?

Have you changed the BIOS to boot to the CD instead of the hard drive or network?

F12 is also a common way to get into the BIOS.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Remember, there is no operating system installed on this computer:

Well, I just checked the Auction Page, and had I read it more closely I would not have bought this ACER

Here are the specs:

Memory Size: 3GB
Processor Manufacturer: AMD
Processor Type: AMD Sempron x2
Processor Speed: 2.2GHZ
Hard Drive Size: 320GB
Optical Drive: DL DVD/RW Label Flash
Video/Graphics Card: Integrated
Installed Operating System: No operating system is installed. Hard drive has been cleared of all data. The hard drive is not formatted and all partitions have been cleared.
License Key: Windows vista home premuim

desktop computer
keyboard
mouse
speakers
o/s license key
original box
Items NOT Included:
power cord
installed operating system
o/s installation media
o/s restore partition
applications / drivers disc(s)
user documentation

I don't know ANYTHING about building a computer. I obviously have the hardware here, so what can I do to get this thing running???

So you will have to do like cryptodan says: boot off the installation disc and perform a clean (aka custom) install of Vista.

F2, Esc, and Del are also common keys that get you into the BIOS.

F12 – Boot Menu
+ Removable (no change)
+ Hard Disk (no change)
+ NVIDIA Boot Agent
P2-ATAPI DVD A
*and
+CD-ROM (when my flash drive is present…)

Del – Phoenix – Award WorkstationBIOS CMOS Setup Utility
Advanced BIOS Features
First Boot Device [Hard Disk]
Second Boot Device [P2-ATAPI DVD A]
Third Boot Device [NVIDIA Boot Agent]
Fourth Boot Device [Disabled]
*the only other option is “Removable”

Integrated Peripherals
SATA Operation Mode (I changed from AHCI to IDE)

*now for a moment I see the “acer” opening screen then

*this also changed my Boot Menu options from P2-ATAPI DVD A to just CD-ROM

(if First Boot Device is Hard Drive)
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER**
(if First Boot Device is CD-ROM)
Boot from CD: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER **
(if I try to boot from my USB***)
Just gives me a blinking cursor

**same message appears if I press enter

***I burned my Windows Vista CD and put it on my USB to see if that would work

...then I realized that a computer does not autorun from a USB. This got me to thinking and my Windows Vista is burned onto a DVD with an Autorun.inf, but the DVD was not made as an auto-run DVD. So, if I can find a new burner program, I will try to re-burn Windows Vista as an auto-run DVD. Hopefully that works

I would highly recommend that you get this: ISO Recorder It is a very light weight and extremely easy CD/DVD Burning program. The version I linked you to is for Windows Vista/7.

If you have an XP Machine then this is what you want: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/v2.htm works on XP.

Arrgh!

From ISO FAQ:
4) Q: I get a message saying "Cannot use this disk". I have inserted a blank DVD-R(W). Why is that?
A: Windows XP version of ISO Recorder does not support DVD operations. You cannot record a DVD image or create a DVD-sized image out of the directory contents. You can still make an ISO file out of a existing data DVD. This limitation does not exist in ISO Recorder for Windows Vista.

I'll look around for something else.. any other options you know of?

*the .iso file is 3.2gb so it won't fit on a CD

Just use Active ISO Burner. It always works.

Pop the DVD in, choose the ISO file to burn, one click (Burn button), wait a few minutes, done. It's that easy.

As for the disk performing differently than your current one (the autorun stuff you were talking about)...I don't know. I just know Active ISO Burner works.

SUCCESS!...i think.

I got a version of Windows Vista Home Premium from a friend, and installed it, and it worked,

but now Windows thinks that it's a on a Dell and instead of the Acer it is actually on.... is this a problem?

What do I do now to make it all compatible with hardware in the computer (video card, etc)???

Also, I have a widescreen monitor... how do I make it fit? currently it only has 4 resolution options (default with Vista, i think)

Well....OEM copies were made for the respective brand that they were made for (obviously). I'm surprised it actually worked....

But yeah, it sounds like it's installed Dell drivers for your hardware. You need Acer drivers.
