I agree with Broni, I think the amount of ram you have is fine and is not the root of your problem, especially since it is the speed of the internet, not the speed of your computer that you are having issues with.

When I did tech support for 2 ISP's back in the early 2000's the amount of RAM a system had impacted how the internet performed when we switched people from Dial-Up to DSL. Those people upgraded their RAM, and low and behold the slowness went away. We saw about 150 people come in with this issue, and after they upgraded RAM their issues were solved.

In short the amount of System RAM does impact how slow your computer is. If your HDD is constantly taking paging hits your speed will be hampered.

896 Megs of RAM is not good enough since SP2 came out for XP. Be default on a fresh install XP uses between 250 and 350Megs of RAM you start adding updates and drivers to that it can easily approach the 800Meg Mark.

My Vista install always uses no less then 2.5Gigs of RAM.

The standard for today is a machine to have no less then 2Gigs of RAM for XP.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Stang, since I removed the Yahoo toolbar I've stopped having problems. Everything is back to running quick.

I am happy to hear that Bleedo. Those toolbars can create such problems for people that I am glad I have never used one. I am glad that was your problem and that you were able to easily remove it and that you got rid of it before doing other things to try to fix the problem.

I knew your problem was no way caused by ram. Unless someone is runnig way less than the 640 meg of ram than I am, and their system has always been slow, or is slowed down by a program they cannot live without, I would never recommend that they buy more ram untll everything else has been exhausted. Ram costs money, removing programs do not. Regardless of how much money a person has, there is no point in telling them they have to spend it unless there is no other way.

Yahoo Toolbar doesnt add that much of a strain. I always recommend more RAM for XP its sweet spot is 2Gigs of RAM. I had a P3 500 with 512Megs of RAM and it ran like crap until I upgraded it to 1Gig of RAM. It was an old office machine used for the front desk area where people signed up for internet accounts.

640Megs maybe fine for you and your needs, but for others always adding more will always benefit them. Adding more RAM also mitigates such issues from appearing again.

These the sweet spots of RAM I have noticed for various windows operating systems:

Windows 3.11 was less than 64Megs of RAM

Windows 95 = 256Megs of RAM

Windows 98/ME = 512Megs of RAM to 1Gig of RAM

Windows 2000 = 1Gig to 2Gigs of RAM

Windows XP Home/Pro 2 to 4Gigs of RAM

Windows Vista = 2Gigs of RAM

I haven't used Windows 7 yet, but I am probably going to assume its the same as Windows Vista.

These have been observed on numerous machines with numerous hardware configurations and from being in the IT Industry for the last 10 years.

We have a machine at work that is Windows 2000 with 1Gig of RAM that constantly has virtual memory issues and it crashes. It crashes when there are 6 Internet Explorer windows up on the screen.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.
