Hello,

Hopefully someone can help. When I first start my computer, my speakers work fine. However, once I come back to the computer after it goes into standby mode, my sound does not work at all (not for iTunes, not for youtube, not for anything). Also, the volume control has suddenly disappeared from my taskbar, and when I go to correct this by going to "Sound and Audio Devices" in my control panel, I get a message box that says I cannot put the volume control on my task bar because it is not installed. I don't know when it became UNINSTALLED seeing as I have never removed it.

I have a used computer, no start-up discs, Dell Dimension 8100 running

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version: 5.1.2600
Service Pack: 3.0
Location: C:\WINDOWS
PID: 55277-OEM-0046585-86670
Hot Fix: KB978207

Total Capacity: 37.25 GB
Sum of Hard Disks: (C: )
Used: 36.72 GB

Free: 540.80 MB

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Diamonds415

Do you get the sound back after computer restart, or it's gone for good?
Desktop, or laptop?

It looks like there are no XP drivers for this model...that may be why your sound is so fickle...

What operating system came with the computer?

Also, your hard drive is dangerously full. Windows will begin to have problems if you do not free up some hard drive space or buy a larger drive. This may be contributing to your problem.

EDIT: Fixed link...sorry.

Those drivers are for the "Dimension 5150/E510". These drivers may or may not be compatible with the original poster's Dimension 8100 computer.

I tried going to creativelabs but I cannot find where to download drivers. Also, I checked the website for the speakers manufacturers (Altec Lansing) and they said all the speakers a re plug and play and do not need drivers, that it may be a computer issue. Any usggestiongs?
