Hello... I have an HP Laptop, with a cd/dvd burner drive. When I try to burn a cd, say I burn 15 songs to it, the first 10 will play fine, but the last 5 will skip, and it gets progressively worse the farther into the list of songs I get. Also, when trying to burn a dvd, it will say it's done successfully, but when I try to play it on this drive it comes up as a blank dvd.

Any ideas or can you direct me where to look?

Thanks... Scott

The laptop is a little over a year old, not sure if that helps any. Could the drive itself be going bad? I did use a cleaning disc on it.

What brand of media? What speed(s) do you burn at?

I went and looked, and it didn't give a speed, just said fastest. I use Sony Dvds and CDs. I never used to have this problem, it seems to have started recently.

I would try some other software...just to see if it's possibly a WMP thing or a system/hardware possibility.

Lots of programs out there that do the job.

The fact that you go through the burn process yet cannot read the disc contents...needs some clarification.

And...I hope you are not making a mistake I've made in the past...trying to read a DVD on a CD-burner. That happens easily on systems that have 2 optical drives of less than recent vintage.

SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

That's my cd/dvd drive. It plays dvds that I've bought, just fine... and store bought cds too. Just not the burned ones.

I'm not sure what answer to give you, can you clarify what you need to know? What program can I get that would be a good one to try and burn? I don't mind paying for software if I need it, but i don't want to if that won't fix the problem.

I appreciate the help..

You've provided all the info that I need...I meant that testing a different burn program would "clarify" what needs attention.

You don't need to pay for a burn program, plenty of free ones around. Unfortunately, I don't use any of the free ones...I use a paid version of Nero that I've had for some time now. I don't want to suggest Nero because it can be confusing, depending on what you download.

Others here will have suggestions about simple burn programs, some ideas at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-best-free...o-cddvd-burner/.

Laptop DVD burners aren't very reliable, their design limitations make it hard to get a lot of use out of them, I prefer a good standard dvd burner in an external case for any frequent use.

Try lowering the burn speed to 4x on dvd's and 8x on cd's.

Thanks..that's what I'm wondering, if I should just get an external drive for burning. It seems to me like this a hardware issue. I downloaded another program and had the same problem. This morning, I went back to Windows Media and tried again, this time put it on slow...the last song had one very brief pause but otherwise was good. I haven't tried a dvd yet..

Any good suggestions for buying an external burner?

I am not sure if your asking for a suggested brand or not, but if you are, I will speak of a drive I bought at Staples super stores which I am very happy with.

It is an external USB drive, check out this link below.

Please take notice. Oreo and I will not be available until June of 2012.
Thank you for understanding my absence, it is job and college related, so all is good. If I do not answer your PMs this is the reason why. See you all soon!

Those slimlines are laptop drives packaged in an external case.

IOMagic cobrands drives which is not very good either.

Actually the refurbs would be my choice

Sony, Samsung and LG are all good companies

Yeah you're right about the drive being a laptop drive in a case, actually this drive is made for use on a laptop as an external drive, however I found it to be very useful on my desktop PC.

I have owned it for 5 months now, burned roughly 160 DVDs and about 60 CD-R disks, so far no coasters.
