Help
I hope I can find some help here, because I'm out of ideas.
I have a dual boot system (Windows 7 and Xp Pro Sp3) on separate HDDs.
Everything was fine yesterday.
Booted up Windows 7 today, my resolution was 640x480, no option to change it.
Had upgraded to Nvidia driver 197.13 about a week ago.
Had skipped v196.25 because of the fan control problems.
I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers (v197.13), rebooted, and reinstalled.
Rebooting after install led to a BSOD.
Tried uninstalling/reinstalling again. BSOD.
Was able to boot in to Safe Mode.
Wanting to eliminate the possibility of malware, I scanned all HDDs with:
Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware
A-Squared
Avira
SuperAntiSpyware
Hitman Pro
Avira Linux Rescue CD
Loaded an image I had made about a week ago (still with same driver).
Same problem. BSOD
Uninstalled video drivers.
Even without installing Nvidias drivers, Windows 7 still installs video driver once it detects the video card.
This leads to a BSOD as well.
Tried Nvidia Archived Driver v196.21. BSOD.
This was the version I had used, without incident, before upgrading to 197.13.
Ran a memory diagnostic from 7 disk, all was fine. Just trying to cover all bases.
Ran Repair from 7 disk to check and repair system files, no help.
Did not see anything in Event Viewer re: video driver.
275GTX recognized in Device Manager "This device is working properly".
Meanwhile, on my XP disk, everything is fine, or appears to be.
On XP I ran ATI Tool, and scanned for artifacts for 5 minutes, no problems.
Finally, I gave up, deleted my Win7 partition, and reinstalled WIn7.
After installing, and before I got to my Desktop, Win7 does a reboot, and, BSOD.
This is before I install any drivers on my own.
Deleted the Win7 partition again. Tried again. BSOD.
Ran an error scan with HD Tune on the XP and Win7 disks (at this point I'm trying anything). No errors.
Installed my old 7900 GTO card in system, with driver v197.13.
I can now boot in to Windows 7, but frequently my screen will distort.
Best description I can think of is diagonal lines, like an old TV with rabbit ears that loses its signal.
This will clear up in about a minute, however, when I try to run any 3D graphics, e.g. rthdribl, the distortion remains until I Alt-F4 out of the application.
In Windows XP, I do not experience any distortion using the 7900 GTO, but the screen will flicker upon logging in to Windows, and seemingly at random while logged in.
On both versions (XP and 7) the screen momentarily goes black while accessing the Nvidia control panel, or right clicking the system tray icon.
From my limited knowledge, I'm guessing this may be a driver or hardware problem, or both.
My fear is that the driver just bricked my 275 GTX, but I'm confused as to why the problems with the 275 GTX appeared only on Windows 7.
Although I haven't ordered one yet, I'm thinking I may have to get a new video card, but I'm wondering if my MoBo could have been affected by this.
I don't want to spend the dough for a new card and install it in a damaged MoBo.
