Problem Installing Vista SP2 Error 490

Hi,

I've tried on numerous occasions to install SP2 on my computer but keep getting error 490 - failed to install.
Doe's anybody have any ideas?

I have tried them directions.
I've been trying to update from the windows update for a couple of months now.

Well...it helps to know the system manufacturer and model, if applicable.

Some OEMs had very specific procedures (and problems) when it came to SP2.

Louis,

Its a Dell 550 series desktop I believe.
It used to operate with XP but when I had a major problem about a year ago and needed the OS replacing the the guy who fixed it installed Vista.

Does that mean that...this person also provided a valid license for the Vista install?

If not, that could be a contributing factor as to why you are unable to install SP2, IMO.

The Guy told me that it was just as easy to put Vista on as the computer had plenty of resources to run it.
I thought it made sense to have the latest OS.

I must admit it has been running fine over the last year or so. Its just I cant install SP2 and it keeps telling me that its an important update.

Yes he had the license and I've had it authenticated/verified on the microsoft site and have an OEM number on my system properties.
