Following BleepingComputer efforts to fix Rootkit.TDSS & related problems (ran Combofix) resulted in following error message upon boot-up:
"SQL Server could not find the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) - please specify the name of an existing instance on the invocation of sqlservr.exe. If you believethat your installation is corrupt or has been tampered with, uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem."
I am not knowingly/intentionally running SQL Server for any applications and am not familiar with how to specify any instance.

I never received a reply to this post and am still getting this message whenever I start the computer. Should I disable the SQL server in the startup?

Hi cbrueckman -
Microsoft SQL Server is a computer application used to create desktop, enterprise, and web-based database systems. It is used at different levels and with various goals.
Do you do any development type work on this computer, or is it only used as a Home computer now ??
Thank You -
