Upon reinstalling the XP OS the XP machine does not see my W7 machine (before the reimage, the XP machine did not see the W7 machine and I just left well enough alone since I could do any required maintenance from the W7 machine). My W7 machine does see the XP machine. On the XP machine, using Control Panel/Network/new network...I followed all the appropriate sharing prompts giving access to others. The workgroup name for the W7 machine is WORKGROUP and that is what I gave the XP network wizard. Using the similar wizard on the W7 machine, all facets of local network were opened for sharing. In addition, using explorer I shared the W7 drive with the network.

I have no idea why the XP machine does not see the W7 machine?

You have to do a little more than change the workgroup name...see the Help & Support files in Win 7 re Joining An Existing Workgroup.

I had the same situation and followed the data provided in the Help menus...no problem now.
