Hello,

When I boot my computer, I receive the following message: "a problem with your hard drive has been detected. consult troubleshooting section of your users manual"

I installed a secondary hard drive from an old computer as a slave. All cables are properly connected. It is a maxtor 20 gig and is not the boot drive. After pressing enter, the computer boots normally, and I'm able to use the drive just fine.

Does anyone know what this can be? How can I fix it?

Thanks.

Check your cables if you are using IDE. Make sure each drive is set to Master and Slave.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

Cables are correctly connected and drives are correctly set to master and slave.

Did it happen when you installed the new drive, or did it exist prior?

I had it previously installed with no problems. I took it out for a while and put it back in a few months ago and the problem arose then. Like I said, it works fine once the computer is started.

I don't know...I'd like to hear what others have to say.

I would at least switch the cables on each drive...to see if it is a cable problem...connecting just the boot/system drive initially...then connecting both drives.

I would also run the chkdsk /r command on each drive.

I would then see if the issue continues.

I would also check Event Viewer for any error listed...which indicates a disk drive.

The error file reads:

The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

Thoughts?

Do what is suggested.

When a user gets such an error message, it needs to be treated for what it is...Windows is telling you that you have hard drive problems and you may not be able to access files shortly.

After files have been removed from the suspected failing drive...the appropriate hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic can be run.

Id still try changing cables that is the cheapest way to determine if its a hardware issue. I have solved many of so called corrupted/dead hard drives by simply changing the cable.
