My scanned pics are grainy

Hi, for some unknown reason my scanned pics have started coming out grainy and look like this when saved into my pictures folder. (below).
It's a 6-month-old Epson SX400 and I use auto-scan just like i've been doing for a long time without any problems, so why it should suddenly start doing this is a mystery, unless the settings have got skewed somehow. Any advice?

Er belay that, things seem to have improved after i tweaked a few of the many buttons, I don't know how I did it..

I'm not quite sure, but its probably settings. If you have buttons, you might have accidentally hit one of them doing something else and messed it up.
