BleepingComputer.com: Dual Boot

XP is installed on C:\
Win7 is installed on D:\

Everything works fine but the default at boot is Win7 and I'd like to change it to XP

I've been told that it can't be changed when the Operating Systems are on separate partitions.

That's hard for me to believe. I have tried all the usual fixes, even changed the boot.ini in XP (the computer then wouldn't boot at all)

Any ideas?

When you follow the path below, do you see both OSs' in the drop down window? If so, just select which one you want as default. OK your way out and the next
time you boot you should be in the OS you chose.

In Windows 7 (not sure about doing this in XP)
Go to Control Panel Home (Start -> Control Panel) -> System and Maintenance -> System.

On the left side pane, under the Tasks, Click Advanced System Settings.

Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

Follow these steps :
- Boot into Windows 7
- Open an elevated command prompt . To do this, click on Start Menu, type cmd. When you see cmd.exe in the results, right click on it and select Run as administrator
- In the elevated command prompt type the following :

bcdedit /default {ntldr}

- Thats it.

I believe that you have to go to the Win 7 boot files and make the "earlier version of Windows" the default.

Once Win 7 is installed after an XP install...the Win 7 bootloader takes over and Win 7 becomes the default O/S to boot into. At least, that's how this system works.

I would use Easy BCD if I wanted to change the default boot O/S.
