save data from harddrive when AC power connection broken connect HD to another computer to save data?

The female adaptor where the power cord plugs into my sons Acer laptop is broken. Because this plastic AC power plug is broken you cant charge the computer, so the battery is dead and we can NOT acesss the data on the hard drive. My husband tried to solderr the wires directlly, This didnt work.

Is there anyway we can connect the hard drive to another computer so that I can save the data?

Or does anyone have any other idea?

If it is an IDE based drive you can buy and adaptor to plug the drive right into the computer. SATA based drive can be attached directly without the need for additonal adapters

It is a hitachi HDD 5k250-160.
HTS5425160K9SA00 5400 RPMS
It also says 5V700mA DC 160GB SATA

So I think it is a SATA.

How do I attach it directly. Can I just go and buy a new laptop at Bestbuy and attach it, or do I need a special cable?

You don't need to buy a computer...don't you have friends, workmates, a job...where there are computers?

You can attach the drive in a small enclosure via USB 2.0 to any system. The method Baltboy described...well, what you do depends on the connectors available on the second system, unless you use a USB 2.0 enclosure (example following).

You can open any desktop with SATA and attach it with a SATA cable and connect to the power suppy. No enclosure needed. Switching it into another laptop would be iffy unless you have another of the same exact laptop in which case it would be fine. Better yet take the laptop to a local computer shop and they can probably solder the connector back on.
