DVD drive problem DVD drive not reading or writing in normal mode

Here is the problem

I am not sure how long back it started, but suddenly I find that my DVD drive is not reading. There is no error message and the PC just hangs.

I tried is safe mode and all is working fine. I also tried MScofig by using basic startup and it works fine.

Now in nomal mode I get the DVD drive to work by this following procedure
1. Go to system and devices
2. Disable the DVD drive
3. Restart the PC
4. enable the drive
and it works

I am not sure what is happening

My PC is XP SP-3, DVD drive is Sony DRU 830, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD

I have e-scan as my antivirus software.

I have Roxio creator-8 installed, and earlier it was working fine.

Please help me to solve the problem

Is there any resistry fix or do I stop some services?

What you have stated...IMO, reflects on your software moreso than the optical drive.

An optical drive is functional from the beginning, in both safe mode and normal boot mode. Booting the system has no impact on its functionality/readiness.

If it reads in safe mode, it should read in normal mode.

If the problem is burning...I'd uninstall the Roxio software and then reinstall it. I'd uninstall/reinstall Roxio, anyway.

I uninstalled Roxio and it worked.

I have not installed it back as yet.

You had an older version of Roxio I think Version 4 which had issues with Windows XP home and Pro. I would recommend getting a more recent version.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.
