Go into the BIOS...is the hard drive properly reflected there?
Last time hard drive was in system when system booted properly?
What model Pavilion?
Most recent changes made?
Any suspicion of malware problems?

Once you create a XP Recovery Console CD...try running the chkdsk /r command.
