well, it didn't work for me at first but you have to read the one section in its entirety and it should work for more than just dv8000's but im just glad to have sound.

I have the same machine, as was previously stated, always look for drivers first. I did a 32bit install, drivers work fine. Sorry my friend, hope someone comes up with an idea.

And it IS a pretty awesome puter still!

Hi there
this is my first post here, so bare with me.
I got an "old" HP DV8120ca labtop and had the same problem with windows 7 x64 bit and the Conexant AC97 hardware.
Here is what I did
I went to HP and DL the Conexant AC97 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit) http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=ob-51288-1
Extracted the .exe archive into a folder called c:\swsetup\SP35558
modified the .inf file from

[Conexant.NTamd64]
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_308B103C
to

[Conexant.NTamd64]
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_308B103C
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD_DF,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_308E103C
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_309B103C&REV_02
%*WDM_AMCAUD.DeviceDesc%=WDM_AMCAUD,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4370&SUBSYS_309B103C

saved the file.
Run the Setup64.exe file
& now I got Audio
The 3 lines added are the hardware ID from my soundcard. They may be a differenced in your labtop.
follow the guide here http://laptop-driver.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-check-hardware-id.html
to get your hardware id
