I have Compaq computer using Windows XP professional. I couldn't boot it. I got error message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". I rebooted computer with XP CD-ROM, clicked repair and ran chkdsk /r. After about 30 minutes, 25% of checking hard drive, it stopped with the error that the volume seems to contain one or more unrecoverable errors. How it possible for chkdsk to stop working? Did anybody have similar experience? Even if certain part of disk is bad, it should mark it bad and continue verification. Do I make sense?

In my experience if this happens it means that the hard drive needs to be replaced.

FWIW: Although chkdsk is a wonderful tool for XP, it cannot overcome all types of problems. If the file system or the hard drive has major problems...there is nothing for chkdsk to do other than point out to the user that is has done its best and that's not good enough to solve whatever is wrong.
