Admanager Controller I can't get it to stay gone

I've read everthing I can on getting rid of this but it just comes right back. I've manually deleted the reg file and on refresh it's back again. I've used Ad-aware which found it, removed it and on a rescan, it's back again. Same with xoft spy and webroot spysweeper. They delete them and on a new scan, it's back again. My file says the program is in (c program files- admanager controller) but there is no such file when I search for it either manually or useing the search function. So I can't even delete the file itself. Now what. I'm fairly knowlegable but this one has me stumped

Hello GaryPin and welcome to BleepingComputer.

You have a couple of anti-malware programs running that may be preventing the fix.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
- Open AdAware SE.
- Go to AdWatch User Interface.
- Go to Tools and Preferences.
- At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
- Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
- Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
- Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

Disable SpySweeper for the duration of this fix:
- Open it, click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
- Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
- Uncheck "home page shield".
- Uncheck 'automatically restore default without notifiction".
Reverse the process after you're given the all clear.

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log.

Hi
Here is the newest scan. I did this after following all your instructions. Note: It seemed to be taking a while to get help so I tried a few things on my own. In Safe mode, I tried deleting the reg key, running xoft spy and spysweeper. The programs seemed to work but on nornal startup, it was all back again. They point to the admanager program as being in a certain place also but it is nowhere to be found "at all"
I also now have the windows config utilitty popping up on startup. It starts wether I choose selective or normal startup or even don't show again.

It appears that AdAware Ad-Watch is still running. I've seen cases where it was necessary to totally uninstall AdAware to get Ad-Watch to shut down. But before we go that far, let's try this again:

- Open AdAware SE.
- Go to AdWatch User Interface.
- Go to Tools and Preferences.
- At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
- Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
- Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
- Uncheck both options.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and End Process on the following if found:

Ad-Watch.exe
AdManCtl.exe

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Admanager Controller\ <--Folder

Reboot and post a new log please.

Hi.

Here is the newest scan, It pretty much seems to be exactly the same.
Just a quick note fyi I do have windows restore turned OFF so no problem there. I am confused as to why I keep hearing in numerous forums about useing the add/remove (it's not listed there on my comp) also advice to delete the file c:\Program Files\Admanager Controller. This file is Not listed and I do have my view set to see ALL files hidden or not. I am aware of some of the file names associated with this admanager and have searched for them also to no avail. I even did a search looking for any file beginning with adman both through DOS and Windows to no avail. They don't seem to exist.
After doing the reboot I noticed that everything came right back. I had all my spy software completely turned off when I did the fix through hijack this. I'm really stumped

Please turn System Restore ON and set a restore point. If you need it, a contaminated restore point is better than no restore point. Unless you 'restore' from a contaminated point, malware backed-up in there cannot reinfect you.

Download Silent Runners.
- Unzip it into it's own folder.

Open the folder into which you unzipped SilentRunners.
- Double click to run SilentRunners.vbs.
- If your antivirus complains, tell it to allow this script.
- When asked if you would like to perform 'Supplementary Searches', click YES.
- This script takes a while, please wait until you get an 'All Done' message.
Copy and paste the content of the Silent Runners textfile you get afterwards in your next reply.

I sure apprediate all the trouble you're going to to help me fix this problem. Another qick note: It seems that along with the other crap that keeps comeing bac, Everything just keeps comeing back. When I ran the last hijack this fix, I also checked a harmless old entry (faxtalk) It didn't stay gone either. Don't know if that meens anything but who knows.

Silent Runners provided little new insite.

I still suspect Ad-Watch may be preventing changes.
Please totally uninstall Ad-aware via Add/remove programs. Then navigate to C:\Program Files\ and delete the entire Lavasoft folder.

Reboot.

Scan with HJT and confirm the following 'Running Process' is no longer listed:

I think that last bit of advice did the trick. I uninstalled adaware and removed the files etc. The hijack this scan seems to be ok now. Who would have thought an adware removal program would stop someone from removing adware. Do you think I should use Spybot instead now? If it looks clean to you now, then thanks a million. We have a local Humane society here that will be getting a little donation

Sorry for the delay - just recovering from a 9 hour power outage....

The log looks clean now.

Many anti-malware programs have a form of active or 'real-time' protection. These work by alerting you, or even blocking suspicious registry changes. Some even remember registry changes and undo them at the next boot. When we 'fix' with HijackThis, we are changing the registry in a way that may appear suspicious. That's why these programs need to be disabled and sometimes even removed for the fixes to 'take'.

AdAware is a good program - so is Spybot Search & Destroy. A newer product, Ewido Security Suite, is gaining a good reputation. No one product does it all, and occasional scans with two or more products has the best chance of removing all the accumulated malware.

[Standard all-clear speech]
Keep HijackThis along with it's backup folder for a bit just in case there arises a need for the backup files it has created. Any other tools we downloaded or files we created can be uninstalled or deleted. If we have enabled viewing of Hidden and System files, go back and re-hide these files.

After you have used your machine a while, and are confident that all is well, we can do a little final cleanup.

Purge Restore points:

XP System Restore periodically creates a partial system backup. It is quite likely that some of the now removed malware has been 'backed up' in those files.

Start->Control Panel->System, System Restore.
Check "Turn off System Restore".
Immediately reboot (all your restore points will be deleted by this).
Then Start->Control Panel->System, System Restore again.
UnCheck "Turn off System Restore" and create a new clean restore point..

Run Disk Cleanup

Click on the Start button and then on Run. Type in cleanmgr then click on OK. Be sure the (C:) drive is selected and click OK. It may take a bit for "Compress old files" to complete. Check all the boxes and click on OK, then OK again.
