I have a laptop that will load perfectly in safe mode with networking but will takes minutes to load on normal startup? I have already used msconfig and removed many services on startup to make faster but the problem appears to be driver related since it will boot fast in safe mode. Is windows using the same driver to load the WIFI utility during safe mode or is a generic driver? All drivers are updated including the wifi 5100agn from Intel.

Machine has no malware and no viruses.

Thanks in advance...

This slow start up is driving me crazy...

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Here is the attached file from autoruns....

FYI.. I have ran Combofix in the past and Malwarebytes and still cannot improve...

Another topic is that Dell does not support XP with this laptop. I had to find all the drivers on my own instead of using the factory installed vista. I have had the laptop for around 9 months and has ran flawless until this hanging on boot up.

Thanks again...

Autoruns log looks fine.

Try this...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

Your av probably got disabled in services, since it was not a MS Service.

Check your services its probably disabled.

The below is your anti-virus:

+ "NAVAP" "AutoProtect" "Symantec Corporation" "c:\program files\symantec_client_security\symantec antivirus\navap.sys"
+ "NAVAPEL" "NAVAPEL" "Symantec Corporation" "c:\program files\symantec_client_security\symantec antivirus\navapel.sys"
+ "NAVENG" "AV Engine" "Symantec Corporation" "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\virusdefs\20100219.002\naveng.sys"
+ "NAVEX15" "AV Engine" "Symantec Corporation" "c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\virusdefs\20100219.002\navex15.sys"

They are listed as Services.

What we just did was a test. You don't want to run your computer with all those things disabled, since you need some of them, namely some AV program.
What we found out is the fact, that some non-Microsoft startup, or service was causing problem.
Now, we need to find out, which one.

My first suspect would be Norton, which is known for causing these kind of problems.

Go back to "msconfig" and re-enable all startups and services, you disabled before.
Restart computer.

Uninstall Norton, using Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen...005033108162039
Turn Windows firewall on.

Restart computer.
How are we doing?

Dan, please. Norton was disabled for a reason. Let me finish, what I'm doing. If it won't do any good, please feel free to provide another advice.
