OK so I started a thread a few days ago where I believed my issue was related to the KB 977165 update. That thread can be seen here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1627942

We decided the best option was to back up the drive by placing it in an external enclosure and did so without incident. Re-installed drive in laptop and inserted XP disk. Set bios to boot from disk and it installs all drivers and get to point where it says Windows is starting then bang - BSOD.

This is the exact same stop message I get when trying to access the recovery console and when trying to boot to safe mode. 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0.)

I then took the drive and placed it back in my external housing and formatted it using my laptop. Same procedure and then same BSOD.

Finally I took a known working HD of larger capacity formatted it using my laptop and again tried to install XP. Every time in every configuration I receive a BSOD when it gets to the prompt "Windows is starting" after loading all the drivers.

This Toshiba laptop is less than a year old. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

Is it a BIOS setting? Could it possibly be hardware related?

I am usually on top of these kinds of issues but am totally at a loss here........

That makes sense now. Can I turn off AHCI and run in compatibility mode?

If not where can I find the driver? It gives me the option to boot from USB would that work?

Thanks greatly for your quick response.

The system is a Toshiba Satelite Pro S300-EZ1513.

The HD is a Fujitsu SATA 160GB Model MHZ2160BH

Not sure if that helps.

According to Toshiba it came with Vista, are you trying to replace Vista with XP?

I have a few Dell XP Home cd's that are sp2 and I have a sp3 XP Home cd as well as a XP Pro SP2 cd. Nothing that is SP1.

I pressed F6 when loading from cd and it said it could not recognize one or more mass storage devices - guessing that is the SATA drive that I need a driver for.

<<It is an OEM disk. I just created a Bootable XP recovery Disk using these instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276527.html and get the same BSOD after the drivers are loaded and before windows starts when booting from CD.>>

OEM as provided by Dell, HP...etc. with a different system?

It won't work on a different system...it's not intended to.

Such disks...do not function in the same manner that a licensed MS XP CD will.

The Dell CD's wont work. You will need the recovery cd's or another OEM/Retail Copy of Full XP Pro or Home with SP 1 or greater.

You can try disabling ACHI.

Yes it came with vista business with a downgrade option to xp. We have been running xp since new.
I am trying my install from a genuine xp home sp3 disk-not an oem or recovery disk. Does it include the driver?
I am on my mobile now but will be back working on it shotly.

You will either need the downgrade option recovery disk or put Vista back on it.

A toshiba OEM xp disk made on another toshiba with xp on it will apparently work and is legal in this context.

The document linked below (which may or may not work since the toshiba site is bizarre) seems to state this as explicitly as toshiba states anything...

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su...amp;x=4&y=8

That said, missing a driver at the f6 prompt or bad memory can cause similar stop errors. Thge toshiba disk, if made on a system with sata drives, should not need the f6 driver.

I have two toshiba laptops (ide) running xp and one netbook running win 7.

Try this and let me know. Get the model # for your motherboard. Go to your mobo site and download the raid drivers for the mobo . Then copy and paste to a floppy, then press F6 when prompted during xp installation to install third party raids
The mobo will then recognize the drive and install windows

Please use restore points often

Its a lap top with no floppy drive, and he would have to buy an external USB one.

Yes, i am aware of that, as i am sure he is, but, that is the only way to get the raid drivers which are needed, without having the proper downgrade disk.
Slipstream will not work nor will putting the drivers on a cd disk. windows installation specifically prompts for a floppy
