Unable to install XP - BSOD cannot boot, access recovery console, or install XP

We decided the best option was to back up the drive by placing it in an external enclosure and did so without incident. Re-installed drive in laptop and inserted XP disk. Set bios to boot from disk and it installs all drivers and get to point where it says Windows is starting then bang - BSOD.
This is the exact same stop message I get when trying to access the recovery console and when trying to boot to safe mode. 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0.)
I then took the drive and placed it back in my external housing and formatted it using my laptop. Same procedure and then same BSOD.
Finally I took a known working HD of larger capacity formatted it using my laptop and again tried to install XP. Every time in every configuration I receive a BSOD when it gets to the prompt "Windows is starting" after loading all the drivers.
This Toshiba laptop is less than a year old. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.
Is it a BIOS setting? Could it possibly be hardware related?
I am usually on top of these kinds of issues but am totally at a loss here........

The HD is a Fujitsu SATA 160GB Model MHZ2160BH
Not sure if that helps.

I pressed F6 when loading from cd and it said it could not recognize one or more mass storage devices - guessing that is the SATA drive that I need a driver for.

OEM as provided by Dell, HP...etc. with a different system?
It won't work on a different system...it's not intended to.
Such disks...do not function in the same manner that a licensed MS XP CD will.

The document linked below (which may or may not work since the toshiba site is bizarre) seems to state this as explicitly as toshiba states anything...
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su...amp;x=4&y=8
That said, missing a driver at the f6 prompt or bad memory can cause similar stop errors. Thge toshiba disk, if made on a system with sata drives, should not need the f6 driver.
I have two toshiba laptops (ide) running xp and one netbook running win 7.

Its a lap top with no floppy drive, and he would have to buy an external USB one.
