When I try to run a Microsoft Update, I receive the following message:

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

When I click on register or reinstall, it downloads, registers and then nothing happens. When I refresh the page, I receive the same message.

I'm running XP and I think it's SP1 because I was having some other problems, ran a repair install and now I have this issue. Also, after repair install, I get this message when I try to set up a wireless connection from my desktop: error in wzcdlg.dll.

Will someone please help?

You need to find out what version (SP1, SP2, or SP3) is installed.

Start/Run...type winver and hit Enter.

Post the results displayed (just the first two lines).

System manufacturer and model?

Looks like no SP is installed.

Download SP2 from Here..

Install it from your desktop.

Read Windows Xp Service Pack 3 (sp3) Information - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic146857.html

Then download SP3 from Here and install it.

Then make a visit to the Windows Update site for additional critical updates that you need. There should be 60-70 of these so it's crucial that you go to the Windows Update Site.

Louis

Thanks for the help, Louis. I'll do it right now. I think you've answered a question of mine before and you always do a great job. I'll post back results.

Installed the update agent, was told it wasn't needed since it was already installed. I stopped and started auto update service through the command prompt. Still having same issue.

it sporadically runs in the background, but does not ever prompt me to install anything. The computer is running very slow, much, much slower than normal since I have not been able to update.

Do you get any error code numbers when running Windows Update?

What happens when you try going to it in IE? What version of IE do you have?
