Hello,
My DSL connection through the ethernet port disconnects when my screen shuts down. Is there any way to set it so that I stay conected even after the screen shuts down? I like to have the screen shut down after a few minutes of inactivity to save power. I'm using a new Lenovo thinkpad T400 with windows 7. Thanks kindly in advance!

Your laptop may be going to sleep instead of just turning the screen off.

Your computer is entering power saver mode. You can choose a high performance power plan
- Press Windows Key + R, type powercfg.cpl and press Enter.
- Choose High Performance or Balanced

You can also, set if your NIC is to be turned off to save power. (
- Press Windows Key + R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
- Select your NIC card under Network Adaptors. Double click on it to open Properties.
- Select Power Management tab, uncheck Allow computer to turn this device off to save power
- Click OK

Thanks -- I do want to use the 'turn display off after ...' feature, to save power etc.
I tried your suggestion about going to device manager, and unchecking the NIC setting 'allow computer to turn this device off to save power' ... it didn't solve the disconnecting. By the way, it is possible the the disconnection is occurring when I hit a key to start up the display after it has shut down, rather than when it initially shuts down.

I would like to add that I have a DSL connection that requires user name and password. I have to connect after the computer shuts down/restarts and after it wakes up from sleep.

OK here is my revised information.
My DSL connection (which needs name and password initially to connect) gets disconnected, not when the display shuts down, but AT THE MOMENT THE DISPLAY STARTS UP after it has shut down. In other words when I move the track pad or hit any key, to start up the screen again, my DSL connection disconnects, and I have to 'redial'. I'm assuming this is from a momentary loss of power (?) to the ethernet adapter/port on my laptop, a new Thinkpad T400. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thank you!
