Hi folks,
Here are the basics. I mention a virus, but the main problem (I think) is not being able to enter safe mode so I am posting this here.
Wednesday morning I ran the updates from windows and on reboot got the BSOD with error code 0x0000007E. Was NOT able to boot to safe mode - system stops on mup.sys driver. Found a 'cure', which was to remove the KB977165 by running the recovery console from my XP CD. Seemed to fix things - laptop boots normally and I can work. However, this morning my Symantec Endpoint anti-virus reports that it finds Backdoor.Tidserv!inf but cannot remove it (it is stuck 'Pending Analysis'). So I went to run a scan in safe mode and viola! I still cannot boot to safe mode, and I have a new stop error - 0x00000050. So, any ideas on how to fix this stop error and get into safe mode?
I am running XP SP3 on a Dell Vostro 1510 with A10 BIOS and a Core 2 cpu. I have Symatec Endpoint running. I am booted normal w/ no problem.

cheers, Rudi

I think I'd do an online scan for AV...download/install/use Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware...and I would then try to install a different AV program, after temporarily uninstalling the Symantec product (it may be damaged).

IIRC, 50 STOP errors have a strong association with malware.

Seems so, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894278

More learned data on 50 STOP errors can be found at http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm.

Alternately, I would post in the appropriate BC malware forum, following all admin procedures posted.
