windows xp pro/32bit- refurbished
175 gb hard disk
3gb ram
avg antivirus
ad-aware
malwarebytes
system mechanic
noscript

better privacy

until about three weeks ago, everything was fine. was looking at firefox add-ons and the screen went totally black. since then i moved to a different part of town and had the internet service transferred. the room that my computer is in has no cable hook up so the service men ran a 25 foot coax to my room. i used a splitter from there to my computer and tv. since then, i have been getting random black screens and freeze ups, blue screens, and delayed write failed errors. on freeze ups and black screens i have to use the power button to turn the computer off and then reboot.
i have since disabled write caching on the disk and have gotten the delayed write failed error only once since then when trying to repair disk errors with system mechanic. but i still get freeze ups and black screens randomly.
i have been to other forums and ran combofix once. the helper said he saw no malware or viruses so i thought it was fixed.
i read that a microsoft update was causing some problems in xp and vista causing black screens. is this a possible cause?
also could the cable hook up be causing some of this?
i have only managed to copy one of the blue screen errors:
kernel_stack_inpage_error
0x000000f4 (0x00000003,0x8A26A458,0x8A26A5CC,0x805C8C8A
beginning dump of physical memory
there are several different delayed write failed errors that i have copied. do you need these?
i appreciate any help i can get. thanks

From http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm:

0x000000F4: CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION
One of the many processes or threads crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. As a result, the system can no longer function. Specific causes are many, and often best resolved by a careful history of the problem and the circumstances of the error message.

My guess (nothing but) would be that your hard drive is failing, but put no reliance on that.

Since it seems that your system still boots...I suggest booting into XP and taking a look at two things:

a. Do a search for any .dmp files which were generated. These usually reflect the detail of various BSODs/STOP errors.

Start/Search...type *.dmp as the search name...you want to search all files, including system/hidden files.

b. Do a review of Event Viewer, looking only for errors. If you see any errors indicating a problem with a drive or disk, post the content in your next post.

How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html

date 2/7/2010 - event id:11 - file name :iologmsg.dll -

here are the errors from 2/1/2010 to date. i didn't know how to post the properties box. sorry if this isn't what you needed. wiill try again if needed. thanks.

Try BlueScreenView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.

Double-click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.

When scanning is done, Edit>Select All. Then File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Based on your subject I would gather HDD Failure and Over Heating.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

In that case, I agree with Cryptodan.

Cleaning the Interior of your PC - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/cleaning-the-inside-of-your-pc/

Hard Drive Installation and Diagnostic Tools - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html. You must use the diagnostic from the manufacturer of your hard drive, run the long test.

re:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html-link to samsung download center is 404.
url is http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd...port_HUTIL.html

my hdd is samsung- series-spinpointp120- model#-sp2004c

this is a bit over my head so i have a couple of questions:

in tool>set max address- i only set mode (to volatile or non-volatile?) and recover native size and hit enter?
in tool>erase hdd- i select no?
in tool>set max udma- i don't know what to do at all. leave as is?
in tool>automatic acoustic management- i choose middle?
in tool>self diagnostic- i choose yes to surface scan?

i don't have a floppy drive so i assume i download Hutil 210 iso (for cd rom drive).zip and then restart with disk in drive and let it run and click through the screens and then post the results? does it download to the disk?
set me straight where needed. thanks.

You would want to do the most advance test possible without wiping data.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

I have a number of Samsung hard drives.

Hutil is the correct tool for your drive, http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd...port_HUTIL.html.

You want to run the surface scan...long test if a short and long are offered.

Those other functions are separate...should be ignored.

Set max address should reduce the useable space on a drive, not what you want.
Erase hard drive is self-explanatory.
Set max udma is unnecessary, will allow setting to UDMA-5 or -6, depending on drive.
Automatic acoustic management...I've never played with that one.
Self-diagnostic...that's what you want to do.

Hutil 210.iso must be downloaded...and then burned to CD with a program designed to do such. I suggest you use Active@Iso Burner (what I use) because I think it's easy. But there are any number of ways to do this, with any number of programs.

The main thing to remember is that you cannot just take an .iso file and burn it the same way that you would burn a CD on your system, the result will not be bootable or useful.

Info only: How to successfully burn or write an ISO-image to cd or dvd - http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm AND How to write a CD-DVD image or ISO - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/write-a-cd-dvd-image-or-iso/

downloaded active@iso burner.
downloaded Hutil210.iso and sent it to "my documents".
opened active@iso burner and typed in path-c:\documents and settings\charles\My Documents\Hutil210_iso_for_CDROM_drive.zip and clicked "burn".
i didn't know how to reboot with the diskette.
in the "execution" section of the samsung Support_Hutil.html page it says to download "Hutil_creator.exe on the diskette prepared from the internet. is that something else that i need to download or was it downloaded with the iso?
how do i actually reboot from the diskette?
do i need to go into DOS to execute or just click "Y Agree Run Hutil" and go directly to "self diagnostic"?
i 'm sorry that i don't know any more than i do but this is confusing and i don't want to mess up. thanks for your help and your patience.

You cannot burn a .zip file as an .iso.

The file you downloaded from Samsung...is either an .iso file when downloaded...or a .zip file which contains the .iso file. If it's a .zip file, you need to extract the .iso file from it (double-click on the .zip) and browse to the .iso file for burning.

C:\Documents and Settings\charles\My Documents\Hutil210_iso_for_CDROM_drive

this is the path to the only file that showed after extracting. ( right-clicked zip file and chose extract)

copied the path to iso burner, clicked burn and it showed burning error.

folllowed directions from http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.html

still wondering about Hutil_creator.exe. is this with the iso or do i need to download it?

shouldn't there be more than 1 file inside a .zip file?

You downloaded the exe version.

You want this one: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd...CDROM_drive.zip
