BleepingComputer.com: Used ComboFix and now Internet Won't work

Hi!

I was recommended to use Combofix to solve malware issues I have been having. Here is what I did:

1) Installed Combofix

2) Tried to uninstall Norton


Everything seems to work fine on the computer except for the internet. It will only do a local connection. I did the 'Repair and Diagnose' but it didn't solve the problem. I also restarted 2x and it still doesn't work. I know it's not a problem with the connection because I'm working on a laptop right beside the busted one and the internet works fine on this.

I'm not computer savvy by any means- just your typical day to day user so (preferably) easy to understand advice on how to fix this would be awesome.

Try this first:


Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.

Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.

Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot.

Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.


Also in your Internet Connection properties make sure the box by use a proxy server is unchecked

I did exactly what you said and it still is not working.

Let me ask a few people

You did not say which version and product of Norton you had and how successful you were in removing it
This could also cause the problem
Run the Norton Removal Tool and see if that works for you
