Help, not sure what to do. THink i have a virus Think I have a virus what do I do next,

Turned on computer, got error message of Windows cannot run this image( something like that) then was able to enter password, then had a black screen all except the trash bin and start button. I could click on start button and get the menu. No icons, could not do anything, tried control panel and everything. I have free AVG 8.5 Ran scan 2 times from safe mode and came up with nothing. What is wrong and what do I do. HELP! This is my work computer.
