A new tutorial titled How to Backup and Restore your hard drive with DriveImage XML was added by thcbytes. Please use this topic to discuss any aspect of this tutorial.

A brief excerpt of the tutorial can be found here:

DriveImage XML is my program of choice for backing up and protecting my data.
When I first began using this application, though, I had some difficulties restoring
my backup image on my test boxes using the instructions found in other tutorials.
Due to this, I pooled info from a variety of available tutorials, and with some
work, I was able to figure out how to restore my data. With this in mind, I
have put all of the information I researched into one guide so that others can
properly restore their data without running into the problems that I encountered.

We hope you find this tutorial helpful.

Oops. My apologies. I read the tutorial, had a question about testing the clone on external hd's, did a search for this forum on cloning and the [wrong] name for the program - found nothing and also managed to miss the post from feb 4th. So I posted separately [Questions on cloning & DriveImage XML]. Sorry, I do try to always search the forum before posting, but my search skills need improving and I obviously need new glasses.
mac 10.6 on macbook pro
WinXP sp2 on Dell 380 w/ 512 MB RAM- currently dead in the water
WinXP tab ed sp 3 on Thinkpad X41 w/ 1.5 GB RAM - lemony flavored
Win2K Sp4 on Sony VAIO GXR600 w/ 512 MB RAM - currently blue screening

Hi,
I'm getting errors when creating the backup. "Unable to flush..."
Could it be happening because the drive I'm backing up is NTFS and the destination drive is FAT32?
The drives are (BACKUP) 70GB 40% used, (Destination is La Cie USB hard drive) 74.5BG 28% used.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400.
Appreciate any help.

Just a quick update. I originally posted this problem in April and I am trying to clone the drive again after my move to a new province. The problem basically is the same. Get errors after 20 % of the backup.
Thanks

Hi,
I managed to create a backup of my desktop. I am not sure if it is because I disabled all my anti-virus and other protection programs. I was able to create the backup on the same USB hard drive although the desktop had 50% less files than my Dell laptop.

I will try backing up the Dell laptop again using the same procedure that I used for my desktop.

Just checked the tutorial. What I also did was leave the check mark for "split large files".

I would appreciate if someone will comment on the significance of using the split large files option.

I beleive the Split large files option is there for easier file management of backup images moving around on more than one hard disk or media Dvd s and so on..

I d like to add a question myself regards the driveimage xml tutorial. Is changing the disk ID on the drive we are restoring to done to ensure that any previous drive letter assignments during image creation are invalidated and therefore windows xp will create fresh drive letter assignments under "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices" ? I m trying to make sense of the tutorial and what I read over here- "http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/partsigs.shtml" . any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated :)

An easy tutorial to understand! I hated DriveXML when I tried to use it originally, but hopefully this should help me :) Thanks!
