Albert, I have a Dell Dimension, which (if my Googling is correct) doesn't display the CPU temp in BIOS or allow any software to read the temp. Know of any other ways to check it?

Budapest, thanks. I'll try that one, although I'm pretty sure my system is clean.

Argh, this is frustrating.

You could try SIW. It can read the system temps on the Dell Latitude I'm currently sitting in front of. Never tried it on a Dimension though.

I tried SIW but it only displayed the hard drive temp, not the CPU temp.

Did you try cleaning inside the case? Especially check the heat-sinks to ensure they are not choked with dust.
