Can l use the student deal Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 'Upgrade Edition' version in a new build.
Or does the PC have to have a Microsoft OS on it.
Thanks

Any upgrade version of Win 7...requires an existing install of XP...even though the user must do a clean install.
Louis
That is, if the user has XP, rather than Vista. Vista users can install over with upgrade versions.

If you buy the upgrade version, you must have a previous installation of Windows already on the PC in order to upgrade. If you buy the full version (not upgrade), you can install it inside any computer (new or not).
So, unless you have a valid, legal copy of XP or Vista to install first (which would enable you to upgrade), you must buy the full version.
Any more questions?

That's not quite true...
You can install the upgrade version on a formatted (blank) hard disk. Though I guess it'd be against the EULA,so I can't post it here. Just Google 'upgrade version clean install windows 7' and you'll find it
Casey
EDIT: The site admin has posted about this with Vista, so I'm going to with 7 -it's exactly the same procedure.
