Greetings All,
I have a desktop PC -Windows XP Pro and a laptop Windows Vista Home Premium - each of which have 500Gb hard drive. I would like to make periodic backups of these two computers to something like an external hard drive. I don't plan to travel with the drive and do not want to constantly backup.
Would you please provide me some insights as to external backup options?

Does that mean that you want a backup program that backs up periodically...on a scheduled basis...to an external hard drive?

That is exactly what I intend to do - make backups periodically - not necessarily on a specific schedule - to an external hard drive. Partically confused because of the two different operating systems.

Welll...there's all kinds of software out there for backing up.
I use backup software I purchased 9 years ago (on XP) and I won't be using it on Win 7...I can't suggest anything that complicated because I've never wanted or used such software.
Best advice I can give you is to take a look at various programs touted as backup solutions...and look for the features that you desire.
Google is your friend for doing such searches.

I use, and like the ease of use of, Cobian Backup 8 (Black Moon).
For Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista.
Once its set up the way you want it, running a backup is just a matter of Start / Cobian / right-click tray icon / select Run all tasks NOW!!.
Let it do it's thing, then shut it down.
Backup takes about 20 minutes per 6 GB.
