BleepingComputer.com: Is my printer okay?

When scanning documents, the scan speed is sometimes fast, sometimes slow, even though the docs are virtually all the same, just standard black text on white paper, but whether fast or slow, the quality is the same.
Naturally i'd prefer fast scanning all the time, so why does it sometimes scan slow? Can I somehow kickstart it into scanning fast every time?

PS- it's an Epson Stylus SX400
