Hope I'm not out of line here, but has anyone thought of networking the two together? Either with a hub/switch/router or with just a crossover cable?

can you network them and then just transfer the files across your network?

You can configure a 98 machine to connect through your your LAN, connect two machines directly through a crossover cable, or connect them through the use of a serial cable and null modem. If both machines are equipped with a phone modem, I'm sure they could be directly connected that way as well, though that one I've never tried.

No Offense intended to any one.

Coupling older Machines to newer ones can be very scarey. This a Classic example from my own experience that I am sure others can relate to.

Back in 1996 I was a total noob on Computers but had a great Mate, Sean, that was a skilled IT Tech. He made top Dollars, but we worked on the Mate System, whereas he did the Job at a cheaper Rate, and I arranged Jobs for his Home at a cheaper Rate. Magic System.

Anyway he set up a Machine for me with WIN95 as my Business Machine on a Pentium1 and also linked it to an old 386 with WIN 3.1 on it for my Kid just 2/3 years old, at the time, to just play Games on. It was quite expensive at the time, but it worked well untill my main Computer kept crashing, losing me all I had worked on.

Three times Sean came but could find nothing wrong. My little man was not playing his Games then. Fourth time Sean was working on it and it crashed, little man was playing a Game. Sean was dumb founded. I walked next door and gently asked my little man what he had pressed? BTW, his Computer was working perfectly. He just pointed to the Windows Key on his keyboard. WIN3.1 did not have that key, ever, it came in with Windows and during the Set Up noone realised that. just so simple?

My little Man is now 16 and is quite a Guru.

If it's a laptop, this won't work. If it's a desktop computer, this will.

Put the hard drive into another working desktop and boot into your normal OS.
Once loaded, goto the Win98 drive.
Copy everything you need.

That should work. :flowers:

Ok let get back to what has happened for far so that there would no redundancies.

The guy is pretty skilled so lets go and collate all the things that has been done.

1. Burn to CD/DVD - did not work.
2. Use Flash drive and USB external HDD - Did not work.
3. Print and file sharing ( old and new pc ) -- wew its really not that easy. One of the mysteries of sharing files between old and new computers.
4. Old school file transfers Laplink cable style. - LPTR , USB, Serial. Not possible with LPTR, Dunno if the new pc even has serial, USB, dunno if there are any laplink usb cables available anymore.
5. Slave the HDD to the new PC. - Not done yet. No mention on the thread.
6. Upload file on the net via wireless. How about a NIC does the computer have a NIC possibly upload via cable connection.

Most feasible solution
-- Slave the HDD on to the new PC or enclose and plug to a USB port as an external HDD.
-- Upload the file on the network via ethernet connection.

I'm thinking that the usb port on the PC is USB 1.1 since USB 2.0 came about April 2000. Most USB 2.0 Flash drives would not work when connected to a usb 1.1. port. Try to check if you still have any USB 1.1. flash drives available to us. Unfortunately most USB 1.1. devices have low storage capacity so it will take a while.
Hardware tech when I was in college.
1st job was a network support for SOHO
2nd job was lappy tech
3rd Job way out of my league but its nice...

Excuse me? Try reading Posts 3, 4, 7, 13, 16 and 17? There certainly was ways mentioned to use the Drive as a Slave, just that most of them were to do it in a different, successfull way to just making it an actual Slave and making it another Secondary Prime Drive, that is even more simplier. No Offense ever intended.

6. Upload file on the net via wireless. How about a NIC does the computer have a NIC possibly upload via cable connection.

Remember that it is WIN98SE? People just tend to honestly just forget that.

Just remember this?

The Original Poster, SaraRose, has not Posted since Jan 31? Members have used this Thread to bounce off Ideas at each other, which is a Great Idea on a Computer Thread. That is how we all Learn, particularly this way with WIN98SE that many people really have no idea about, same as DOS and WIN 3.2. All Old Systems, but still very much in use.

I really do know that XP could access things from the HDD on WIN98SE, 98 and 95 and also WIN3.2 using what has been shown in those Posts, also DOS Games from WIN3.2, WIN95,
WIN 98SE that used DOS, could be played, but it depended on the CPU Speed? Too Fast the game just went Crazy. I do not think Vista or WIN7 can do the same, but that is up to my Peers that know those Systems better than me. I really know the compatibility with WIN98SE and WINXP. It was the most Magical thing that M$oft ever did.

Basically Yes.

Edit: I am quite sure that SaraRose would never be offended by us using this the way it is being done? It is all on Topic and we are really trying to share Knowledge. That is what Bleeping Computer is really all about. When SaraRose returns she will be able to read this Thread and maybe, Learn, as can others reading it.

Here is an idea, try to copy the data to a online backup service, such as Windows Live Skydrive, or Mozy. You could also try using Windows Live Sync, which will sync and copy the files between the computers, but i dont know if Windows Live Sync will work with Windows 98.

That is how we Learn? I am sure that it wont. Maybe Keith UK has some thoughts on it? he is quite a Guru on it. He still uses WIN98SE, I haven't, for quite a while. Just rely on what I know. I always bow to his knowledge, as my Peer. Never ever forgetting Eyesee, we agree so many times.

Maybe, if Gen Y did the same? We would have a better World?

No offense taken, but I've had a 98 system hooked into our home LAN for several years now without issues. Everyone seems to want to open up the units and move hard drives around or upload files to one medium or another just to download them to yet another.

How is any of this easier than hooking up the 98 box to your LAN and joining a workgroup, or in the worst case scenario, connecting the two boxes directly with a crossover cable that you can buy for about $3 or make even cheaper? XP will handle the transfer just fine.
