BleepingComputer.com: Bluescreen on boot until next day

Hi,

I am have a Gateway NV58 laptop running Windows 7. It exhibits a very frustrating behavior every couple of months. I will be using it and all of a sudden, it will bluescreen because an error occurred and it is protecting itself. Rebooting into normal mode, it will work for a minute or two and then bluescreen again. In safemode it bluescreens even faster. However, in safemode with command prompt, it will boot up stably.

Playing around in the command prompt safemode, it bluescreened again when I tried to run explorer.exe.

And then it gets weirder: I let the thing sit overnight in the command prompt safemode, and the next day, everything is fine. It did this last night and I am using it to write this today. This is great, but it has happened twice now and I am afraid it is going to happen at some time when I really need the computer.

AVGfree and Malwarebytes pick up nothing, and I have no other problems with this computer at all.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

As you can see, all errors are SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION @ ntoskrnl.exe
Unfortunately, it can be caused by almost anything.
We'll have to try eliminate some possibilities.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:



8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:



10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:




It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Well, I do have too memory sticks in there; however, I had trouble getting the cover off to get at them. I ran the memtest instead. After 7 passes, there were no errors.

Well, it's a laptop, so the memory is behind a plastic cover with six screws in it. I started to remove the screws, but couldn't really get purchase on them and I was afraid I was going to strip the heads. Since you gave me an alternate method, I decided to try that first. If you think I should still do the memory swap test, I will try the screws again, but if there are other things we can go after, it might be easier. Let me know.

I'm not trying to be a pain. It's just that this computer is pretty new, and I'm a little afraid I'll mangle it trying to get it apart.

I contacted Gateway. They told me to do a Windows Vista recovery which will wipe the thing and start over. I assume they will tell me to reinstall windows 7 when I get Vista up and running. Obviously, this is a really crappy option. I am willing to do it if I thought it would help, but my big concern is: How will I know if the problem is fixed? The computer is working great right now. I'm trying to prevent what happened before from happening again.

I am dreadfully afraid that I go through all the pain of the recovery, the thing will work fine (as it does now), they will close the ticket, and I will have just as much risk of a repeat incident as before.

I just wanted to get a second opinion from you, and if you can point me to other non-warranty-invalidating diagnostics I could run before this recovery step, I would appreciate it.

Are you saying, that you're not experiencing any issues at this moment?

Yes. As I described in the first message, the crashes happened on 12/31 and 1/28. It is running great now. If it was a single crash, I would just chalk it up to windows and ignore it. However the failure mode is that the computer continues to crash on bootup until the next day, and from that point on works fine until the next incident. This renders the machine useless until the next day, which seems like it has to mean there is something really wrong.

Maybe you should try to remove that RAM cover and try to run the computer on one RAM stick at a time.

Ok, I finally manged to get a hold of a better screwdriver and try this. On the first stick, it booted up fine. On the second stick, it booted up fine, but I got a warning that I had a bootleg version of Windows (which I don't).

Putting both sticks in (reversed now), it also boots up fine, and the warning went away.

The Gateway people only said, "Wait till it acts up again and then reinstall Windows" which is not very comforting.
