I have seen many Hollywood movies where some genius hooked several separate computers together and had then function together as one supercomputer. now I thought it was Hollywood just being Hollywood until I heard that Google originally did that to form their super computer, and another company cray did it to create their supercomputer.
how would someone go about doing something like this?

well first step would be to have several different computers networked together, next step would be to be a programming genius. lol the easiest way would be to find an opensource OS like Linux, install it on all the machines, and then write your own code that would allow them all to communicate with each other. Personally, for anything more specific I wouldn't be much more help but thats the basics. it is possible to do however, ive heard of people taking around a dozen pentium IIIs and hooking them together like that, that can outprocess most anything today.

I just did a little research, and it looks like some variations of linux come with support like this built in, such as slackware. http://www.slackware.com/ you might give them a try if your interested in doing this.

I already have a bunch of older Linux machines. like 1998 time frame. I would like to be able to use them again but as it stands the hardware cannot handle much in terms of today's software.

well, if you set it up right you will need the software like the slackware linux I recomended, good knowledge of operating code, and a lot of network cables and at least one router. :D
