Are the speakers plugged in to the correct port on the soundcard?
If the speakers need to be connected to a power outlet, is the cord firmly plugged in?
Are the speakers turned on and the volume turned up?

Is there a way you can take the card from your daughters computer and install it in another computer to see if it works?
You would have to install the drivers in order to find out.

If it were me, I'd try that before buying a new card.
My apologies to you for not thinking about using the on board sound. This topic is about sound cards, so that's what I was focusing on.

Before you install any drivers for the on board sound, plug the speakers into the ports for on board. If there are music files on the computer, open up a media player, play one of the files, and see if the sound works.

You have 2 choices-find the drivers for the device, download them, and install.
OR you can check with Microsoft update. The drivers may show up there. If they do, install them.
Go to Microsoft update. Choose CUSTOM, let it scan. After the scan completes, it would be listed under Hardware if it's available from Microsoft.
If you don't get it from Updates, and you need help finding the drivers please post the name of the on board sound device.

I still suspect the card may have died, but the only way to find out would be to install it and the drivers in another computer.
