sites opening in new tabs automatically

hi all. I am new to this as well as not being overly computer literate! This is what I would like to know:
can an unwanted site open itself up in a new tab in firefox?
does the 'recent pages' list show pop ups or only sites that have actually been opened (including sites that have opened 'themselves')?
