No, there's no exclamation point. The one exclamation point I mentioned above, happened while trying other things. When I got it back to square one, it was gone, and I was left with my original problem. No exclamation points, sound device loaded and "working properly" in device manager, but "no sound device" in the control panel sound properties.
All audio has stopped working: On-board and sound card??

To those who come here for a solution, I'm sorry but we never found one. I think I agree with Moby that this was a motherboard (hardware) problem, but I had to return the computer to it's owner who asked me to look at it in the first place. I told him he might try a clean OS install, if he's so inclined, but there was still no guarantee.

Quick question, not to confuse you......are your speakers working OK?
Are the audio wire plugs plugged into the sound card or into the speakers correctly? Make sure the plug is pushed all the way into the socket. (strangely enough cats and dogs love going behind towers and speakers and pull on those wires)
Sorry I just had to ask this. Because maybe that was your problem origionally and now you created new ones trying to fix what wasn't broken..
Sorry, but as a system repair tech I've found this happens a lot with PC speakers that plug into the sound card, the plugs get pulled out, or wire at plug gets broken inside casing causing intermitent problems.
Sometimes the plug falls out behind the speakers.
Its just a question/suggestion/theory really.
