system restore hung up in middle of restore process

I am running XP Pro SP 2. I started a restore process. Things seemed to be working fine, until the status bar showed about 90% completion. It has now been hung up there for about 1 to 1.5 hours I am getting the impression the process is not going to complete. How do I get my self out of this predicament?
