Computer question.

What can this low budget computer do?
I'm going to be purchasing it for someone.

OS: Windows XP PRO 32-bit
RAM: 3GB
Video card: GeForce 8400 GS 512 MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCIe
Processor: Pentium 4 HT 3.4 GHz

It's not strong but he usually plays games like COD4, F.E.A.R 2, Half Life 2, GMOD, GTA-SA, F2Ps like: Combat Arms, Drift City, A.V.A(?), Soldier Front, Project Torque, ETC.

Don't judge on resolution of the game, let's just say it's under 1024 by xxxx or somewhere around that mark

Can this system do it?

It is a crippled videocard no matter how you look at it. At 1280 X xxxx it runs FEAR (original) below mid 20 fps. It will be a slideshow at any reasonable resolution.

I play soldierfront and can safely say that it can run GTA-SA, combat arms, A.V.A. and drift city fine. I have a 7300 LE GeForce.

It might be able to run those games but certainly isn't enough to enjoy them.
If you are open to upgrading the video card, we can suggest one that will meet the requirements.

How would that not run those games enjoyable? I have a 128MB nVidia GeForce 7300 LE and I can run them without a problem.

Not to debate about it but have you taken a look at the recommended system requirements for games like F.E.A.R 2, COD4 MW2?
To render an enjoyable experience is why there is a difference between MINIMUM system requirements and the RECOMMENDED one.

Like I said, it can run those games just fine but if one needs to max out settings for pure eye candy, something better helps. :blink:

I think part of the problem is we differ on the definition of "fine".

I guess we can upgrade the computer- But for no more tahn 50-60 dollars, it must be a LOW PROFILE PCIe video card.

Well. I already know what motherboard the computer has.

Which would be: Dell 0KH290

The power supply is 305 WATTs, so I already know I'm limited to finding a video card.
And, obviously, it has one PCIe x16 slot.
Another thing: The computer is a Dell ( MINI ) GX620.
So, again, it needs to be a low-profile video card.

I know it's possible for this computer to run the games I have listed because: Well, they're all about 4 years old ( Well, 3 years, but it's 2010 sooooo, 4 years. )

Hi,

Looks like your best bet among low-profile cards would be the 9600GT.

Note that it requires atleast a 350W PSU with a current rating of 26A on the 12V rail.

As far as I'm concerned the factory requirement is not 100%, it's just the recommended power needed.
I've used a video card that needed 550W PSU ( Recommended/required) on a 500W PSU.

They do RECOMMEND the particular value for a reason, all things considered. :blink:

Anyway, my earlier post was to simply highlight the requirement of the card, more specifically the power requirement on the +12V rail, that your card will draw power from.
