My pc, running under XP SP3, started being very noisy some days ago. Today this message appeared (Unmountable boot volume) and no way to boot (is would boot over and over). So I boot with XP System Recovery DVD and run CHKDSK. After that is went alone, no way to control it, saying things such as "file record segment xxxxx is unreadable" 5 times, then "deleting orphan file records etc..." mpre than 50 times, then "deleting index entry" 3 times (system.ini, sessionstore.js, sessio...1.js) and eventually saying CHKDSK is recoverning lost files. It's been stuck at this point for at least 6 hours and I don't know if I should leave it all night like this or is I should do something? Do you think I will be able to recover my documents (my last full backup dates back to June unfortunately...) ?

When chkdsk has not been run for a lengthy period, it takes a long time.
This time is compounded if the hard drive has problems and/or C: is it is very large.
